World corn stocks are getting smaller
Posted: 11/17/2009

World corn stocks are expected to shrink by some 3.8 million tons during the 2009/10 production year, the latest monthly USDA report estimates.

According to the report, overall coarse grain stocks will decline by two million tons despite higher small grains production by EU nations and a good barley harvest in Kazakhstan.

The report lowers carryin stocks for corn by 0.9 million tons due to higher feed usage by the EU and South Africa. Global corn production will be down 2.8 million tons as reports of reduced production come in for the United States, Brazil, EU-27, Russia, Venezuela, and Canada. Some of that will be mitigated by bigger crops in South Africa and Ukraine. Brazil’s production will also be down 1.0 million tons.

The report expects less activity on the export market for corn and barley. Israel will import less corn as producers turn to feed wheat.

Global coarse grain ending stocks will be 3.8 million tonnes smaller, based mostly on changes in the U.S. crop as well as declining crops in Brazil and the EU.
